WAIAKEA KAHAWAI(Stream) is 54.86~Acres of unspoiled mauka(mountain) nature, only a few minutes drive from downtown Hilo! The Waiakea Stream borders the upper boundary of this parcel and also lends its name to the aina(land) below this impressive water feature. A majestic house site is prepared, next to Waiakea Kahawai, awaiting the new owner to build a stately home on the banks of this stream.
Koa trees surround the edges of the clearing, which are a "growing asset" and a remarkable part of the Flora of Hawaii nei. Koa is a highly sought after and prized hard wood used in furniture, flooring, trim for houses, traditional canoe building, jewelry among other high-end applications.

Huge Eucalyptus Robusta trees, as well, dot the landscape, like "sleeping giants" as they sway in the wind. Other native plants include: Ohia Lehua(endemic hardwood of Hawaii), Hapu'u Fern, wild Orchids native to the Orchid Isle, Lycopodia(with its medicinal attributes).
The roads through WAIAKEA KAHAWAI are well maintained and thoughtfully engineered with many and various swales built into the roads, to run off water. Many boulders line the roadways, covered with lychen, moss and fungus, adding to the mystique of the landscape.

The Mauka side of Waiakea Kahawai has a rustic Department of Water Supply, Hawaii County, concrete water diversion building(not owned by DWS now), which is part of this property, showing the history of this land as a source of pure water for the population of Hilo. This is an important liquid asset for the next well-positioned owner!

WAIAKEA KAHAWAI awaits a new caretaker(konohiki) to enjoy, appreciate and care for, this special land, conveniently located in Hilo, Hawaii Big Island!

South Hilo

Hilo town, the hub of the South and North Hilo districts, was once a thriving port for the sugar cane industry. Today it is the Hawaii County Seat and home of the island's major state and federal offices, a modern international airport, Hilo Medical Center, the University of Hawaii-Hilo, and state-of-the-art Imiloa Astronomy Center.

Although Hilo is not an incorporated city, it is the second-largest population center in the state with over 40,000 residents according to the 2000 census. Hilo also has an array of commerce and entertainment offerings--boutiques and galleries, big box stores, restaurants, museums, and several hotels.

The historic Bayfront area, though impacted by major tsunamis in 1946 and 1960, is still a center of economic and cultural activity, including a weekly farmers market, Palace Theatre events and the annual Black & White Night, Merrie Monarch, and Ho'olaule'a festivals.

Embracing the town's reputation as "the rainiest city in America", Hilo residents have a certain pride about East Hawaii's weather and enjoy a different flavor of Hawaii life than their neighbors on the dry west side. The Big Island’s famed greenery, tropical fruits and flowers, trees, ferns, forests, and farms all require reliable rainfall to thrive. Water is so important to life in Hawaii that waiwai (the word for "water", doubled) translates as "assets, valuable, wealth, rich, worth and benefit."

As is true for much of the Big Island, Hilo real estate is a mixed market, with upscale custom homes and fixer-upper "opportunity" properties, condos, vacation residences, private estates and oceanfront property. A knowledgeable Clark Realty agent can guide you to the best Hilo property for your needs.
