North Hilo

Know for nearly ideal tropical weather, stunning cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and vast expanses of hardwood forests, the North Hilo district on the Big Island's Hamakua Coast is home to several small communities, including Ninole, Papaaloa, Laupahoehoe and Ookala.

Those least familiar with North Hilo likely know the stretch of Hawaii Belt Road that runs through the district for the three dramatic gulches that define this section of the Hamakua Coast drive: Maulua Gulch, Laupahoehoe Gulch and Kaawalii Gulch. Those more familiar with the district are acquainted with its rich history, including its deep roots in the sugar plantation era, traces of which are still very evident today.

A significant amount of land in this area is zoned as either agricultural or "forest reserve" conservation land. In some cases, residential properties are located adjacent to expansive forests of prized Koa or Ohia trees.
