Those least familiar with North Hilo likely know the stretch of Hawaii Belt Road that runs through the district for the three dramatic gulches that define this section of the Hamakua Coast drive: Maulua Gulch, Laupahoehoe Gulch and Kaawalii Gulch. Those more familiar with the district are acquainted with its rich history, including its deep roots in the sugar plantation era, traces of which are still very evident today.

A significant amount of land in this area is zoned as either Agricultural or "forest reserve" Conservation land. In some cases, residential properties are located adjacant to expansive forests of prized Koa or Ohia trees. As with the rest of the Big Island, this is a place where both plantation-style village homes and multi-million dollar estates are common offerings among listings for sale.
