The Orchid Island Dog Fancier Club Inc. (OIDFC) will be celebrating their 100th anniversary of hosting an American Kennel Club sanctioned All Breed Dog Show here on the Big Island. This momentous occasion will take place at the Edith Kanaka’ole Multi Purpose Stadium in Hilo on February 18, 19, and 20, 2012. The event is one of two AKC cluster shows held on the Big Island each year. The second cluster is held in October. OIDFC was founded in 1973 and is a non-profit organization that promotes the sport of purebred dogs and responsible pet ownership through various activities and training classes offered throughout the year. In recent years, approximately 150 dogs representing 50 breeds have entered at this event with several entries traveling from outer islands–all competing for the coveted “Best In Show” title.

This year the Saturday event will mark the club’s 100th AKC all-breed dog show. A special “Parade of Titleholders” for any dog holding an AKC Title that has competed at these events over past years will be added, as well as additional entries for the “Best Puppy” in show.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) sanctions all breed dog shows throughout the year on the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu. Island shows held at centralized venues offer dog owners enough points per win to allow most owners to complete their dog’s AKC championship without having to fly to the mainland. Each holiday season, the Salvation Army gathers gifts for the needy children in our Big Island community. These children have a wish list and items from that list is placed on a tree ornament. “Angels” come by the table, select an ornament, then go to a retailer for the gift item and come back with their purchases.

In the past, I’ve seen some generous donors make repeat visits to the table. Many of the volunteers at the table come from service groups within our schools, local churches, or community organizations that want to help in any way they can. During the holidays we see evidence of the Salvation Army’s community services throughout with the bell ringers outside local establishments.

If anyone is interested in volunteering to sit one of the four-hour shifts still available, they can contact Captain Shoshannah Ruwethin at the Salvation Army – Hilo, 935-1277.

The Angel Tree project begins on Friday, November 25 and continues through Sunday, December 18, 2011.

Located in the Hilo Lagoon Centre across from Hale Kaulike, the State Judiciary Complex, Ku’ikahi Mediation Center has been facilitating peaceful resolutions to community conflicts for over 26 years. Originally a program of the YWCA, Ku’ikahi became an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation on January 1, 2006. In addition to working directly with community members seeking mediation services, Ku’ikahi receives cases referred by the Hawaii Judiciary, providing mediation services as an alternative to litigation.

Arabel L. Camblor, Broker in Charge of Clark Realty’s Hilo office, nominated Ku’ikahi as a 2011 CRCCF grantee this year. Ku’ikahi Mediation Center’s services are offered to handle disputes in real estate transactions but they also offer assistance in mediating family issues. They want the public to know there are better options to problem-solving other than litigation or resorting to violence. “Many of our REALTORS® volunteer their time to KMC and have undertaken the extensive training in order to contribute their services to our community,” says Arabel. “It’s another way we can give back to the communities we serve.”

Plein air painters at Hilo's Pukihae Gardens

At our last gathering of Plein Air Artists of Hawaii Island (PAAOHI), my painter friends and I were able to paint at a beautiful South Hilo location known as Pukihae Gardens. The gardens are currently listed for sale as three parcels, MLS 246203, 246139 and 246196.

Pukihae Gardens are in the heart of old Wainaku, on the edge of a stream in the Wailuku watershed.
