Update – March 14: Tsunami damage in Hawaii estimated at $300 million
–
Many Hawaii residents and visitors breathed a sigh of relief earlier this afternoon when the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center canceled the Tsunami Advisory that had been in effect for the state throughout the morning. Hawaii was under a Tsunami Watch and then Warning overnight after the massive earthquake in Japan yesterday. The first tsunami waves to hit Hawaii arrived at approximately 3 a.m. HST. The largest waves hit Maui and the Big Island’s Kona Coast.
The last areas to remain under evacuation orders from Hawaii County Civil Defense were North and South Kona. From reports that have come in from around the Big Island, it seems that the most extensive damage from the waves that hit Hawaii Island was sustained in West Hawaii’s low-lying coastal areas. Initial reports conservatively estimate statewide damage at approximately $3 million, according to Hawaii Civil Defense Vice Director Ed Teixeira, although the Honolulu Star Advertiser notes that this figure does not include private property damage.
Governor Neil Abercrombie has issued an emergency proclamation that will allow the state to seek federal assistance for recovery efforts.

Are you aware if there was any damage to the Puako Rd area and rental residences in that area?
I heard of one luxury residence on the ocean side of Puako Beach Road that had flooding under the pylons from the tsunami, but no significant damage at all. Puako was basically spared any damage. Vacation rental properties are certainly still available and beckoning. (Puako has some of the most magnificent snorkeling and diving in the world – I saw the largest puffer fish in my life there a few years ago in an underwater cave – about the size of a fat Golden Retriever!)

Thanks for the information. Glad to hear it. The only way to get this kind of information is from someone who is there. We’ll be booking something over there – not sure when (I’d like to see things in Japan under control first). Any suggestions for a one bed room residence on Puako Beach Road for about 10 days? VRBO seems to have plenty to offer.
Thanks again
Neil
Neil,
We work with a great, longtime agent who is located in Puako and has specialized in that area as well as Wailea Beach right next door. Her name is Pattie Freeman and her company is Hawaii Vacation Rentals. Website is http://www.puakovacation.com and her phone is 808-882-7000.
Pattie really knows the rental market and is fun and easy to work with.
Aloha, Gary
Thank you very much for the info – can’t wait to visit again.
