QR = Quick Response

QR Codes, or “Quick Response” Codes, are two-dimensional bar codes that can be scanned using a QR code reader on a smartphone. Although the codes have been around since 1994, the “buzz” about them has only recently started reaching an audible level outside the “early adopter” tech crowd.

As more people trade in their older model cell phones and switch to smartphones with mobile connectivity, QR codes are becoming more useful in the real world, including in real estate.

Property owners, you may be seeing QR codes on postcards or fliers you receive from real estate agents who regularly mail market updates to you.

The codes are also showing up on business cards and in newspapers, magazines and other print publications. Luxury Portfolio announced in September that they had already debuted QR codes in the Wall Street Journal European edition. I recently scanned a Microsoft Tag code in Condé Nast Traveler that allowed me to subscribe to the magazine using my Droid phone.
